A 20 tonne chunk of Chinese space rocket has lit up the sky after crashing back to Earth and landing in the sea off the Maldives.

Amateur cameramen caught footage of the 32 metre lump of debris as it fell at 27,000 km/h.

The part was jettisoned from a rocket China launched last week as part of their mission to create a new space station. The Chinese space agency has been criticised for acting irresponsibly.

The world has been on alert the past two days waiting to see where the space junk would land.

With rocket flights increasing in frequency and ambition, driven by SpaceX and the goal of reaching Mars, the question of the human risk from space junk is becoming more real all the time.
